I have my own heated atoms to manage, and I have your solargraph with me to read this weekend. I could give you all kinds of ideas for how to “market” your book, but I would much rather you be wonderfully yourself and just say a prayer for it to find its readers.
So much of this resonates, pitch perfect. I realized I am probably avoiding pitching a manuscript to a publisher because if they accept it I'll have to self-promote and market it. As public as I am, I'm an introverted extrovert who can extrovert for only a short time and then I have to take a nap. I dread, fear and cringe at self-promotion. I was fortunate I had my business during the pre-internet era and I stayed very busy with an unlisted phone number, no ads, no Yellow Pages or BBB, my only source of work was referrals. The glut of internet attention grabbing stuff and places you MUST be to get business or even a 2 second look is intimidating and soul-crushing to me.
And, yes... writing about what it's really about by writing about what it was about before the distance gave you some perspective and clarity about what it wasn't only or really about it a hard thing to sell in a couple paragraph pitch. That said, if I was a reviewer I'd probably give your book a look if I got that letter. May it be blessed.
Steve, you’ve got to send the book out!! I already want to read it! I feel like book making is a lot like having kids. You can’t think too much about the difficulties that will probably arise down the road. Or, at least that was my approach.
Actually, let me get back to you in a year. I should probably let this thing play out before claiming it was all worth it. Lol.
